Individuals and Societies Highlights

This week the grade 6 students went on the Week Without Walls field trip experience. Those who remained in class worked in groups to propose and evaluate a variety of solutions to global poverty. They collaborated with their classmates to create a “diamond 9” of the most effective solutions. They presented these on a well-designed and colorful poster to the class. Students were also introduced to the grade 7 units.

The grade 7 students spent the week being introduced to concepts and vocabulary they will be exploring in grade 8 I&S class. The students looked at concepts around geography, the natural world, landforms, and disasters. The students completed a research activity on matching definitions with vocabulary words.

The grade 8 students began the week completing their final summative assessment on quality of life. The students created posters comparing a country, of their choice, with Canada. The students then completed a short quiz on Quality of Life to review their understanding of the concepts. The students ended the week being introduced to the units they will explore in grade 9, all centered around history.

The grade 9 students spent the week running an urban development simulation during the Industrial Revolution. The students worked in teams to follow steps to see how society, and cities, changed as people migrated and these places needed to expand and develop to accommodate a rising population, more factories, and the impact these had on society, people, and the environment.

This week, grade 10 students discussed the final exam and shared their thoughts on the questions asked and how prepared they felt. Students also worked on a word search for Unit 4 vocabulary as well as creating a comic strip that represented key ideological debates that were happening in the world in the post WW2 era. I wish all grade 10 students a wonderful and restful summer as they prepare to enter the DP!

Psychology
The Grade 11 Psychology students spent the week working on and presenting their Group 4 project.

Global Politics
Grade 11 students spent most of the week working on the Group 4 project. On Friday we held a check in to make sure students are prepared for the work they will need to do for their IA over the summer as well as the students who need to prep for the HL Oral Presentation.

Business Management
Students continued developing their Internal Assignment topics in preparation for the ongoing research over the summer.

Arts Highlights

Pre-K (Evan Kirby)
This week the students got to use tempera paint to express their creativity and work on their fine motor skills. As the year comes to an end, I cannot express how grateful I am to have been a part of their learning journeys and see them grow up into the beautiful humans they are now. Excellent work everyone!
K1 (Evan Kirby)
This week in K1 the students learned how to make butterflies with pipe cleaners and popsicle sticks. They enjoyed expressing their artistic agency through choosing what colors they wanted to use for their butterflies. I’m so proud of how far they have come this year. It has been a profound experience to see them grow as human beings. Excellent work team!

K2 (Evan Kirby)
This week in K2 the students got to use their favorite markers to create a landscape drawing with a castle! They are getting so much better at using basic shapes to form images, a quintessential part to their visual arts skillset. I am so proud of how much all my little artists learned this year! I am so excited for their artistic journeys to come.

K3 (Evan Kirby)
This week in K3 the students got to choose what creative activity they wanted to do! Most of them chose to use play dough and a few of them wanted to draw. It has been such a profound experience to see these little artists grow their creative skillsets throughout the year. Excellent work team!

Grade 6 (Roxane Joubert)
Withseveral students participating in our inaugural ‘Week Without Walls’, studentswho chose to attend school enjoyed a change of pace with their supervisingteachers. Tasks given this week served as relfection activities and woulddetermine the skills students were able to develop during UNIT 4. Our Grade 6students completed their still life drawings and can now look forward towinding down into their summer vacation. As this will be my final week as theMYP Visual Arts teacher, I would like to thank Grade 6 for always giving theirbest. It has been a rewarding experience for us all. I also owe Mrs. SvenjaOpfer a debt of gratitudefor supervising Grade 6 this week.

Grade 7 (Roxane Joubert)
As a final activity, Grade 7 used their knowledge of Op Art and the technical skills they acquired to complete two drawing challenges. Both activities focused on line width, positive and negative space, pattern, and repetition. The goal of these tasks were to determine drawing proficiency and observational drawing skills acquired over the course of UNIT 4. This week will also conclude my duties as their MYP Visual Arts teacher. Thank you Grade 7 for productive and enriching year! Extending thanks to Mr. Lucian Stefanescu and Svenja Opfer for supervising Grade 7 this week.

Grade 8 (Roxane Joubert)
This week Grade 8 were tasked to create a concept sketch based on a proposal. Students were encouraged design a vibrant piece of street art that should reflect the skills they acquired during their investigation of UNIT 4. This activity guided them through the process, from brainstorming ideas to sketching their vision and developing an artist statement. As I prepare for my departure this week, I would like to thank Grade 8 for making this a memorable year. It has been an enormous pleasure guiding your way through the Visual Arts, Grade 8! Mrs. Svenja Opfer and Mr. Lucian Stefanescu are to be thanked for her support supervising Grade 8 this week.
